Crunch Time

Interviews are on the horizon and I'm trying my best not to stress out, though, I'm feeling the crunch. My first interview is this Monday and I am not even close to prepared. Tomorrow, I have a mock interview with a career development rep and I've barely practiced my 2-minute story. I wonder where the last 2 weeks of break went and kick myself for being so apathetic. I needed the break and though I know that, it's hard not to be frustrated. Of course, what's done is done.

Yesterday and today were spent sitting in a classroom for Training the Street, which essentially is a crash course on valuation. It's been helpful and I can only anticipate that it'll help me answer technical questions during interviews.

Bid points for interviews were also submitted today. The closed lists are small and thus each company allots a small number of interview slots for bidders. This is you choosing a company instead of a company choosing you. We'll know after 1p which interviews we "won" and what the schedule will be for this coming week. Deciding how many points to bid had me flustered last night. I was lucky enough to be invited to a few interviews I wanted, but there's a sense of realism that hit as I stared at the recruiting history of the companies for which I was bidding. There are not an infinite number of offers out there and I fear that I will need to look somewhere else for an internship.

On a more positive note, the trip to Colorado was incredible. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect NYE with a great group of people. And it seems after 3 years off the slopes, I can still hold my own.

And I'm Back!

Home sweet home! There is nothing like returning to the humble abode after 5 days somewhere else. It truly makes you appreciate the comfort of home...and the kitchen! :) As much as I enjoy eating out, I love a home cooked meal at the end of the day. (It's cheaper too)

Colorado was a true whirlwind and I enjoyed every minute. Do you ever look at your friends and think, wow, I'm lucky? Because after this past trip, that's exactly how I feel. One of my best friends from middle school moved to CO my senior year to attend Boulder. She graduated a year later and has been in CO ever since. Though I was not the only factor, I was definitely a contributing one. So when she tells me it's the best decision she ever made, I not only feel partly responsible, but also feel truly happy that she is doing so well.

Additionally, I saw my best guy friend, with whom I don't talk much these days as we always seem to play phone tag, and my old roommate, who is always a riot to be around. I finally spent some time with my friend B's BF, which is good as they will likely get married in the upcoming years. Between going out with friends, partying in Washington Park and relaxing on the couch, the trip was successful.

I also ran the BolderBoulder which is (apparently) the largest timed race in the country. It was only a 10K, but given my ankle problems over the last month and thus lack of exercise, it definitely wasn't easy. I was definitely happy with my time of 56 min for 6.2 mi at altitude (over a mile high). It felt good to be back in Boulder. My memories there are some of the best of my life.

Next up... St Thomas on June 7th - 15th.

Looks like I will be shipping my car given the new travel plans for my friend's wedding. The family is also pushing for me to join them in Germany on the 26th of June for 2 weeks. It sounds fabulous, but I'm hesitant. I do want to attend the Forte Conference and I do want to spend time in Boston. I know these seem like silly decisions, but for whatever reason, they're hard for me.

PS. I love my orange pen from Darden. It makes me smile.

Officially Unemployed...and Other MISC Adventures

Friday was officially my last day at work after almost 4 years. It felt weird to walk out the office door and know I was not going to return anytime soon. Yesterday, I received a gift from a client that should help me in business school. It's Nuance Communications Dragon Naturally Speaking 9. Pretty cool gift though I don't have my new laptop yet and thus it will sit in the box for another month. Immediately after I left the office, I picked up my bag at home and headed to the airport to catch a flight to Vegas.

Yes, Vegas, AGAIN! But this time was different, I went for a soccer tournament. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy all that is Sin City, however, I definitely got my workout in the 95 degree heat. We had a team of 14 and one "mascot". During our first 2 games, we were still getting used to each other and the way we play as individuals. By the 3rd game, we were pushing through and taking names. We made it to the semi-finals and gave that team its first goal against. Ironically, it was another California team and we all had friends on the team. I guess it fuels the fire a bit. We had a disappointing loss, but I wasn't quite upset. My legs were done and after 3-4 hours of sleep a night, dancing until 2 am or later and playing 2-4 games in the heat, it was time to go home.

Since I've been home, I don't feel I've accomplished much. I relaxed with the boy on Monday, which was quite pleasant and ran errands yesterday. Today I'm attending a fashion show, then I have to pack for Colorado. Tonight I'm catching dinner with a friend with whom I haven't spent much time. Somehow it feels like there's not enough time even though I've removed the daily 8 hours of "work" from my life.

As for logistics -
I still can't decide if I want the Lenovo Thinkpad T61 or Dell D630 laptop. (Any thoughts?)
I THINK I've decided to move my stuff across the country starting June 13th-ish... (now to plan it, and find a sucker to drive with me)
Health Insurance - what to do until school starts and then when school starts?
Costa Rica - the pre-MBA trip that happens to partially coincide with a bachelorette party (for a wedding I'm IN)
Europe - is it going to happen?
Forte Foundation Conference - I'm attending, now to plan it.
Going away party - currently planned for July 19th - should it still happen? (Will likely already be on the East Coast)

That's the short list, but you get the point. Leaving for Colorado tomorrow as well... busy busy.

Who is JulyDream?

Perhaps this should have been my first blog post and over the past year, I've started this post multiple times, but I can never get it right. It's hard to convey who is JulyDream in one simple post. Nonetheless, figure out what it is I want to say about her, and in essence, me. JulyDream was my first online alias; started as a screenname that I created back when 56K was all the hype. Even though, the connection speed never seemed to venture over 28K. When I created JulyDream, I was roughly 11. In the midst of my middle school years, I never knew this alias would follow me as it has.

The Breakdown: I started with July because it is my birth month and for some reason a mild obsession of mine, much like birthdays in general. The latter part of the alias was construed from my love of dreams and everything that comes with them. I lived under a sea of stars that made my room glow bright for about 5 minutes solid before dimming to dreamland.

It all seemed logical at 11, and now, almost 15 years later, JulyDream still exists. I'll admit that I wait for the ridicule or the popped eyebrow when I tell someone my email address. Luckily, AIM names are meant to be ancient, so people just expect a name predating high school. Although I have tried many times to get a "grown up" email address, it never works. I have a short first name and nine letters in the last name is rather difficult. Additionally, I want something that I can tell someone with minimal spelling required. This is JulyDream.

So, who is she? She grew up a native of the Bay Area peninsula. After an uneventful high school experience saturated with athletics, she chose CU - Boulder over Arizona and San Diego. Her first semester she joined the CU Club Soccer team and can count on less than 2 hands how many times she went out drinking. Maybe it was a sense of responsibility, or perhaps it was simply that she enjoyed herself with and without the intoxication.

As the years passed in Colorado, she forged lifelong friendships, with which she continually keeps in contact. For the first 2 years post graduation, bimonthly trips were made to Colorado. Over the last year, those have dwindled, substantially. After an exciting homecoming weekend in October, she was quickly reminded why she viewed her Colorado experience as a perfect 4.

Post college, she moved home. Not just home in terms of the Bay Area though, but literally, home, the house in which she spent 7 of her growing years. If you've ever met her parents or even her grandmother and uncle, you'd understand what she means by, "her parents party more than she does." Her brother swears that if she leaves, he's moving out too. Hopefully, that plan isn't too far on the horizon.

Today her life revolves around work, soccer, and business school applications/essays. After completion of the GMAT two days before her 25th birthday, she researched schools. Her options narrowed to five schools - Kellogg, Ross, Darden, Georgetown, & London Business School. Her future plan is fairly specific, although completely conditional on business school acceptance.

More details:
Ice cream addict. Footy (soccer) player. Enjoys laughter. Pool enthusiast. Weak ankles. Independent. Caring. Honest. Flawed. Positive. Reliable friend. Traveler. Dancing queen. Organizer. Purist. Night-owl. Musically obsessed. Poet. Scarred. Tomboy. Baker. Patient. Outgoing. Sensitive. Loyal. Social. Sleep deprived. Pancake fanatic. Vivacious. Cuddler. Movie buff. Runner. Photographer.

I am JulyDream.

Homecoming 2007

The mountain towers the football stadium and places itself in the bright blue sky. The cheers blaze - "shoulder to shoulder, we will fight, fight, fight fight fight!". It's the true treasure of college football. The big game - CU, an unranked opponent of number 3, OU. The endzone is packed with fans in red. They were all convinced that OU would come out on top. With a 24-7 lead at half, I was almost convinced as well. But not a moment too soon did CU start one of the best offensive/defensive drives I've witnessed from the sideline. It was breathtaking. The boys in black and gold put their heart into this game and came up on top - victorious - in one of the best games since CU trampled Nebraska in 2001.

The city was fully alive. We walked to Pearl to grab pizza at Old Chicago. Everyone was out in full force and celebrating. I'm not sure any of them went home between the game and the evening of debauchery.

It's days like that, that remind me why I fell in love with Boulder. Strangers are never strangers for long and friends are plentiful. It's your quintessential college town nestled at the base of the Flatiron mountains. The perfect weather begs you to walk to your destination instead of drive. I wish I had time to stay longer, but I don't think my body or liver would have liked it.

Boulder, Colorado

The thing I miss most about Boulder besides my mountain, my friends, and the good ol’ college days is WALNUT! I used to live at this restaurant. My freshman year of college we went once every two weeks, at least. As time went on, that never got much better. When Nate asked if I would join him on a road trip from CO to CA the only think I could think of, besides being a good girlfriend, was the Walnut Brewery.

Since graduation I have been privileged enough to return to Colorado every two to three months. My last friend graduated in May of this year and since then I hadn’t been back to Boulder. Needless to say, I was quite excited!

Lindsey was kind enough to pick Nate and I up from the airport. We got a late start seeing our flight was delayed. Our 6 person dinner party had grown to 10 by the time I landed. We called and put out name in on our way into Boulder. Thinking we may be cutting in close, we forwent the change of clothes and went straight to dinner. Our wait, seeing we had 10 people, was an extra hour from our arrival. I must admit, the food, company, and atmosphere was definitely worth it. Unfortunately we realized that none of us have a free place to crash anymore in Boulder, talk about sad.

The girls had their limited drinks at dinner to ensure they were able to drive home. Hawk was quite a few deep but still wouldn’t do the booty dance. He claims he isn’t a monkey! After dinner we headed to the Foundry for more cocktails. It pays to have an old roomie that works at a bar. Drinks definitely weren’t as much as they should have been.

Dom and Dan came by to say HI! My few last friends left in Boulder limits. The night ended early with Linds dropping Nate, his brother and I off at his bro’s house. We got settled and tried to get some sleep besides the usual Boulder chatter outside the window.

The next morning the alarm started going off @ 7 am. Of course I didn’t get out of bed til 8 am. We met up with Jonathon and headed to Le Peep to breakfast. I still think they have the best pancakes in Boulder no matter what. Nate and I were on the road by 11 am and I was out about 20 min later. Took the diagonal out of Boulder to I-25 then to I-80 once we hit Cheyenne, WY. We followed I-80 all the way home to SF. 2 shifts each later and we arrived in Reno. I took the last shift from Reno home and we were home just barely before 6 am. The idea of soccer at 9 am crossed our minds, but needless to say it didn’t happen. It was all in all a fun weekend, even with the 18 hours spent in the car.

CU v CSU Game Sept 8-10

I probably should have blogged this earlier, but I will admit that the whole weekend is a little hazy and discombobulated. Brandi picked me up from the airport like a good friend. We headed straight to Old C’s. My friends are so sweet to put up with my “needs” for food. Hawk was the token guy as always with Brandi, Susan, Christine and me. He fits in so well as long as we aren’t discussing menstrual cycles and make up. After Old C’s we all went home to get ready for a night on the town.

Hawk, Jen, Christine, Brandi, Susan, and I all met up and went to Public House. After being there for a bit we headed to Downtown Tavern. I ran into an old neighbor and Lesley Horton who just say happens to live in DC. Talk about missing her by a week!!!! The posse had left by 12:30 am and Brandi and I decided to head home and prepare for a crazy Saturday at the CU v. CSU game.

Saturday morning started by waking up to Miss Brandi on the phone. We told everyone that we were meeting at Sports Column at 12 noon. Brandi and I only thought it was polite to show up on time. We arrived by 11:45 am and had a beer in hand when the first person showed up. Slowly everyone came and met us. We found out there was a shuttle from Sports Column to the stadium for free if you had bought something. Around 2 pm we decided to head to the bus. We met up with some friends that were tailgating in the parking lot. We were all standing in line at kick off to get into the stadium. It was a bummer to find that they were not serving an alcohol at the stadium. Although you could get alcohol on the Club Level. Within moments of sitting down, half the crew was gone to meet up with the boys on the club level. I didn’t see most of them for the rest of the day/night.

Teena, Michelle and I enjoyed the game which is what we came to see. We caught the bus back to Sports Column and all separated to get ready for the night except all my stuff was at Brandi’s house and she was MIA. Linds and I had dinner at Cheesecake Factory. We met up with Christine who was about a bottle of wine deep. Michelle and Derek met us at Sports Column for my third time that day. We went to the roof and I started breaking it down where there was room. Some dude would NOT leave me alone. What part of I don’t want to dance with you, don’t you understand?? Seriously WEIRD! The night finished up with Chrstine and I going back to her place. She has a COMFY bed, I highly recommend it.

I briefly got to meet Brandi’s new man when he picked me up from Christine’s. We packed at Brandi’s, hit up the store, and she took me to the airport. Another weekend in CO survived.

Welcome Home...

Good Morning and welcome back to the real world. There is something about getting up at 5:30 am that isn’t just wrong, but it reminds you that the weekend is over, and Monday has come all over again. Although I spent most of yesterday sleeping and recovering from another crazy weekend, my eyes feel heavy and a day of rest is all I could ask for, however I guess that will have to wait until next Sunday.

I think the best thing about going on vacation is coming home. After two long weekends, one in Colorado and the other in Las Vegas, it is good to be back in California and know that I will be staying home this weekend.

Labor Day weekend I took off to Colorado for the CU v. CSU game as well as my friend Christine’s B-day, and visiting as many people as possible in 3 days. On a Friday when you get up at 5:30 am and work 8 hours, going out that night as much fun as it is, wears you down. Then of course you have to get moving Saturday morning to get from Denver to Boulder, hitting football traffic 5 hours before the game, only to shower and start drinking at 3 pm. We were late to the game because we were still in the bar taking shots. Ran to my girl’s house at halftime to chug a beer and return to the stadium after the 3rd quarter had already started. Surprisingly enough, Colorado won the game, fuck em up fuck em up, GO CU! (They also won this past weekend v. WSU!!!) Of course what do you do after the home team has won a football game? You skip dinner, continue on your liquid diet and go out partying for the night… 11 hours after I started drinking we all made it back to my best friend’s house to wind down the night. (Sorry Hawk, Linds and I stole your bed)

Sunday was a little mellower, breakfast at noon and a nap for the afternoon. Dinner at the Walnut Brewery and out to the bars again. Although I didn’t drink too much after Saturday s binge and Friday night’s craziness, I should have said no to all alcohol.

We finished up the weekend with lounging on the couch all day Monday only to make an evening flight out of Colorado and return to California @ 10:30 pm.

A short 4 day week made the blurs of Colorado fade away and the adventures of another drinking packed weekend come to light... Crystal and I were off to VEGAS! City of Sin… Our flight seemed to be the longest short hour possible. Crystal was inquiring to why the young man next to us was going to Vegas. In the beginning he seemed nice, but as the trip went on, he seemed to get annoyed the she was asking too many questions, and not the “right ones”. Oh well! After finally arriving in Vegas we spent 30 min talking in the airport to some random people that were on our flight. We made it to the hotel, dinner, and ready to go out @ 10 pm. We danced at Studio 54 @ MGM for a good 5 hours… Left there @ 4 am with a group of boys ranging in ages from 23 -32. Still playing quarters @ 5 am. At which time the future wife to be calls her honey to make sure he is being good. Girls – NEVER call your fiancĂ© on his bachelor party. It is his last weekend of craziness with the boys. And if you don’t trust him, why the hell are you marrying him! After enough drnking, we decided to make our way back to the hotel. Crystal was quite confused as weather to say good morning or good night. We tried to make friends with the guys still playing craps, but they weren’t entertained at 7 am. It wasn’t because they were cute or anything, we just figured they didn’t look like they had been to bed either. This is what Vegas is all about!

After getting a good solid 6 hours of sleep in our COMFY beds, it was time to get moving again. We walked along the strip for a couple hours, had lunch, which ended up being dinner and finally returned to the hotel again for some football. (had to see if my Buffs won) Crystal napped for an hour while I watched football, then it was time to get up and get ready for the final night in Vegas. We had decided we were going to check out rain (of course I have been there now 4 times, but it was Crystal’s 1st). We got in line and started to drink, the only problem was by this point I was starving again. The club was packed and the music was GREAT! We turned in a little early seeing that our flight was at 9:50 am. I still think we were up until 4 or 5 am though. LOL

Sunday morning! I have never seen an airport quite like this on a random weekend. Everyone was leaving! Lines were long and it was HURRY UP and WAIT! We arrived at the airport and hour and a half prior to our flight, finally getting to the gate as the flight was boarding group A. That was close! Arriving home, mom picked us up and made us pancakes!! (Mom is the BEST!) I started to watch the 49ers and dozed off while I realized what a horribly ugly game it was going to be. Slept for most of the day, then most of the night. It is soo good to bed home and next weekend, I am not going ANYWHERE !!! Thank goodness, I don’t think I would be able to survive another weekend. Soccer starts this coming weekend and I can’t wait.

Back to work, hope everybody has a GREAT week!

Couple notes:
Jay – I hope you found Miss Joey and I hope Miss Joey had a wonderful BIRTHDAY!!
Crystal – Thanks for coming with me!!
Lindsey – Thank you for being such a great host, but you are a horrible drunk dial… lol

DONE!

I figured it was only appropriate to have my first random thought be about college graduation! I am finally done, at 10 AM this morning I finished the last final that I may ever take in my life. It was definitely the last one of my college career and after 18+ years of school, I can honestly say, I NEED A BREAK! And so break it will be, partying and hanging out for the next couple days or however long my body can handle it.

3 weeks ago I was soo excited to graduate and move back to California, but as it gets closer, it gets harder. There are many people in Colorado that I consider good friends, however I fear that that may not be true forever. We often have problems with out of sight, out of mind. I know I am better than most at that, but it takes two to tango. I guess I am saying, give those old friends a call once and a while, you never know what friendships can be rekindled. My best friend from 6th grade moved out here this semester and needless to say the past 6 weeks have been an absolute blast as well as totally insane. Some random guy that I met at a club a couple years ago, is now one of my good friends and will be here for graduation in a couple hours. THANKS JAY! There are many other familar faces that I don't always talk to, but it is always nice to see em, esp. all my club pimps (you know who you are). I guess that would make me a club rat or something like that. College graduation is all about starting a new chapter in your life, just don't forget about the old ones. I will come back to Colorado to visit and party like we used to, as long as all my CO buddies promise to visit me in the Bay Area!

I am looking forward to hanging out with old friends in California. It will be odd being back at my parents house, but it shouldn't be that bad if you know my family. I guess the whole point of this is that I love all my friends and whether you are near or far, I will miss you and you better keep in contact.

Thanks for being GREAT FRIENDS! :~)
